About 83 Gallery
83 Gallery was born in 2008 in the basement of 83 W 1st Ave. Finding most of their local artists on Craigslist, the monthly call for entries simply stated “we accept any and all mediums, styles, and ideas.” The inclusive, DIY spirit of 83 quickly gained traction among artists who had become disenchanted with the Columbus gallery scene. A faithful cult following began to develop. In 2009, 83 Gallery found a new home in the Short North Arts District (in what is now Oddfellows Liquor Bar.) Over the next 5 years, the gallery showcased over 500 local artists, hosted musical performances, provided art classes, and organized numerous creative events. They even ran an additional exhibit and event space, 83 Gallery South, in the Brewery District from 2013-2014.

83 Gallery was known for its epic parties during gallery hop. The featured exhibitions often consisted of over 40 artists and 200 works of art, hung from floor to ceiling in a dense, salon-style installation. These monthly openings would draw hundreds of people to enjoy the punk bands, creative vendors, circus performers, dancers, an endless river of PBR, and the traditional champagne toast at 10 pm.

A persistently playful and antithetical perspective of traditional art world pretension created an inviting environment for artists who felt alienated from the standard, bourgeois gallery scene. 83 worked tirelessly to support these outsider artists through gallery sales and commissions. The gallery’s mantra and primary branding point: Own Local Art.

83 Gallery developed a large, yet tight-knit family of artists, volunteers, and collaborators who believed in their vision. This team dedicated countless hours to support an arts space that was inclusive, community-oriented, and inherently disobedient.
