My body’s liturgies: A Grieving Landscape, arranged and performed by artist Nico Lawson, is a performance installation that combines dance film, live performance, and interactive exhibition to share an autobiographical and participatory journey through the entanglements of grieving the traumas of living in a queer and disabled body, the search for belonging in a world that rejects fundamental, beloved parts of me, and unrelenting hope in a future that offers tenderness for our most vulnerable parts.
Created in collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Spayd, composer Dorian Ham, and dramaturge, Michael Morris, this project offers audiences the opportunity to enter the world of Grieving Landscapes and experience the alchemy of the liminal: the cyclical space where tidiness and completion escape you and possibility runs wild. Audiences are invited into this ritualistic space to name and offer what they need for a more tender and compassionate future.
A note from the artist - “My creative process is not a black box. I enjoy inviting people into my process because I love sharing my research and practice while learning from and collaborating with my community. These workshops below are my invitation into the world of Grieving Landscapes and are intended for anyone no matter what level of experience you have.”

WORKSHOPS

Moving Meditation - 12:00 - 1:00 PM
GET TICKETS HERE
This gentle movement workshop is intended for anyone with any level of movement experience and ability.
Movement can produce magic - helping us to focus our minds, release stress, and express feelings that might otherwise be challenging to verbalize. In this moment of collective fear, grief, and rage, moving in community can help us imagine the more tender and compassionate future that we yearn for. This moving meditation invites participants to engage in this collective imagination.
The workshop will begin with a moment of centering and simple warm up. We will then participate in a guided movement meditation as an individual, in pairs or trios, and finally as a whole group. We will close with a cool down and return to our initial centering practice.
Writing Secular Prayers - 1:30 - 2:30 PM

This writing workshop is intended for anyone with any level of writing experience or ability.
Sometimes we just need to send our hopes, fears, and intentions out to the universe. Whether we adhere to a creed or have been non-religious our entire lives, we all hope that someone is listening. As a recovering ex-vangelical, I have found that reimagining practices from my previous religious life to be liberating: reclaiming prayer outside of the Christian context has allowed me to reconnect to the mystery and wonder of the universe that sparks my fire. This workshop invites participants to explore this secular writing practice.
The workshop will begin with a moment of centering and a brief conversation about what constitutes a “prayer” and how we define it for ourselves. We will then participate in a collective period of writing, followed by an opportunity to share and discuss our work. The workshop will close by returning to our moment of centering.
